March 2016
The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was a document issued by the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army during the Easter Rising in Ireland, which began on 24th April 1916. In it, the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, calling itself the “Provisional Government of the Irish Republic”, proclaimed Ireland’s independence from the United Kingdom. The Proclamation was read by Pádraig Pearse outside the GPO on Sackville Street (now called O’Connell Street).
Since it is 2016, 100 years after the 1916 Easter Rising, our school decided to write a modernised proclamation about what type of Ireland we would like to grow up in and how we could help to achieve this goal. Seven children were picked from the debating team to write St. Anne’s Proclamation.
First of all, we went around the school to all of the classrooms asking the children about what kind of Ireland they would want to live in when they are adults. We gathered information and we were put in charge of one or two topics each.
We then used the information to add to our Proclamation. Finally, we created opening and closing statements for the 2016 Proclamation.
The main concerns for all of the classes are the following:
- Equal rights
- Homelessness
- Racism
- Education
- Health
- Green Energy
- Culture
