Painting like Michelangelo

by Iona Finnerty and Síofra Power

October 2016

In October, we did paintings in the style of Michelangelo like the ones he did in the Sistine Chapel. At the time, we were learning about the Renaissance and the changes in art in that time. We stuck paper to the underside of our desks and lay down on the ground.

We then painted over our heads to experience how hard it was for Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel while lying on his back painting upwards. We put newspaper under us so we would not drop paint on the floor.

We painted scenes from the Bible such as Adam and Eve, Noah’s Ark, The Beginning of Life and the Parting of the Red Sea. We used many different colours in our artwork. It was challenging but in the end, our work paid off. It was fun to do and we would definitely do it again.
